1.1 Background of the Study
Road safety awareness is a critical public health issue in Nigeria, where road traffic accidents account for significant mortality and morbidity rates. Addressing this issue requires multifaceted approaches, including education, enforcement, and advocacy. Films, with their unique ability to educate and engage audiences, are increasingly recognized as effective tools for promoting road safety awareness (Abubakar & Musa, 2023). In Nigeria, films that incorporate road safety messages can reach diverse audiences, illustrating the consequences of unsafe road behaviors and encouraging compliance with traffic laws (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). Toro Local Government Area in Bauchi State, with its growing population and increasing vehicular activity, faces road safety challenges such as reckless driving, poor road infrastructure, and non-compliance with traffic regulations. This study explores the role of films in promoting road safety awareness in Toro, focusing on how cinematic storytelling influences attitudes and behaviors regarding road safety.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous campaigns by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other stakeholders, road traffic accidents remain a persistent issue in Toro Local Government Area. Traditional methods of creating awareness, such as flyers and public seminars, often fail to capture the attention of the target audience effectively (Ibrahim & Garba, 2023). Films, as a widely consumed medium, offer an alternative approach to disseminating road safety messages. However, the extent to which films influence road safety awareness and behavior in Toro remains underexplored, creating a need for research to understand their impact.
